The town grew around the estate, as towns do when there\u2019s a steady supply of work and money. Then the Sarini\u2019s started dabbling in witchcraft, and because Cheliax is Cheliax, they turned their craft inward. Then they preyed on their own town to feed it.<\/span><\/p>\n When the townsfolk caught on, there was a huge uprising, and all the Sarinis were hanged. \u201cSarini\u2019s Hollow\u201d became \u201cSarini Gallows\u201d, and in time it was shortened to the cheery name we know and love today.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAnd what\u2019s this got to do with me? Or Iskaryn?\u201d I asked. I mean, it was everything I <\/span>hated<\/span><\/i> about Isger all in one tidy, horrible package, but so what? Lots of places had dark histories.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s an insular place. They aren\u2019t real warm to travelers, see. You\u2019ll be welcome as long as you are spending your money, but not a moment longer. And, because of their history, unless you\u2019re a priest of a respectable faith, open displays of magic don\u2019t sit well with them.\u201d He hesitated. \u201cAnd that\u2019s, uh, where the bird comes in.\u201d His tone went dour there. He didn\u2019t say, <\/span>especially with her attitude<\/span><\/i>, but he didn\u2019t have to. The message was received. Iskaryn literally ruffled her feathers at that, but said nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n So that\u2019s just great.<\/span><\/p>\n Iskaryn has been a lot of things. She has been my conscience, my shield, and my anchor. She\u2019s stopped me from falling into old habits. She\u2019s pushed, if sometimes <\/span>dragged <\/span><\/i>me forward, when I just couldn\u2019t summon the will. And Magdh knows she\u2019s been stubborn, irreverent, and infuriating.<\/span><\/p>\n But she has <\/span>never<\/span><\/i> been a liability.<\/span><\/p>\n He must have seen something in my face, as he softened his normally gruff manner. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to do anything drastic. Just keep it subtle.\u201d He gave Iskaryn a pointed look. \u201cAnd act like a bird.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n To me, he said, \u201cI\u2019m telling you this because she\u2019s done well by us. By <\/span>me<\/span><\/i>. She\u2019s spotted trouble a couple of times, and because she can talk, we dealt with it before getting close.
